Professional Biography

Professional Experience:

Dan has over ten years experience in academic management and teaching, gained in the UK, Hungary and South Korea in both the HE (Higher Education) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) sectors. Prior to his role as Academic Lead, he was a Programme Leader for Level 3 and a Module Leader for Professional Skills and English for Academic Purposes 1. Dan has also worked as Director of Studies at two London language schools, taught a wide range of courses to students from all over the world, and gained several years’ experience in the civil service.

 

Research Interests:

Dan plans to develop his research in the area of educational development, focusing initially on his current work in relation to active learning, peer observations and assessment, marking and feedback.

 

Teaching Interests:

Dan teaches on a range of modules in the Foundation, Language and Skills department including English for Academic Purposes, Academic Skills, Professional Skills and Employability Skills.

 

Impact and Engagement:

In his role as Academic Lead, Dan is responsible for improving standards of teaching and learning across GSM London. He has led a number of initiatives, including the promotion of ‘active learning’, whereby students are actively involved in their classes through various tasks, activities and discussions as a means of enhancing their learning and developing key skills. He has also introduced a faculty-wide scheme to allow staff to observe each other’s teaching in order to share ideas, reflect on their performance and continually develop their professional practice. He continues to work on a range of projects including the provision of lecture recordings to students and the development of practice around assessment, marking and feedback.
